Croatia Backs North Macedonia EU Accession

Reading Time: < 1 minute

North Macedonia’s bid for EU membership has been blocked by Bulgaria over a language dispute. But EU member Croatia is pledging its support for North Macedonia’s accession to the EU.

Top leaders of Croatia and North Macedonia met this week, stressing their good relations. Croatia’s prime minister, Andrej Plenković, expressed Zagreb’s backing of Skopje’s EU bid following a meeting with North Macedonian president, Stevo Pendarovski. Both members of NATO, they also agreed to step up common economic activities and cooperate on arms industry matters.

Starting today, 1 July, Croatia and Slovenia co-chair the European Union. Croatia’s president, Zoran Milanovic, said given their common history and cultural affinities the two countries could facilitate accession issues like the one faced by North Macedonia in the Western Balkans, and those of others in the region wishing to join the EU.
